General:
Semi-terrestrial perennial with leaves arising in small clusters from a thin creeping rhizome.
Leaves:
With 4 rounded segments (leaflets), resembling a 4-leaved clover; individual leaflets rounded or wedge-shaped elliptical, 0.5-3 cm long and about as wide, submerged or floating on the water surface, or in terrestrial plants standing on thread-like stipes.

Habitat / Range

Inundated lake margins in the steppe and montane zones; rare in SC BC; E to SK and S to FL, LA, TX, NM, AZ, CA and MX.
